An atmospheric mid-century oil painting by Swedish artist Bengt Ågren, depicting a sunlit street scene with figures gathered before a whitewashed domed building.

Painted in 1967, the composition is beautifully restrained, using broad, confident brushstrokes and a harmonious palette of warm earth tones, soft greys, crisp whites and vibrant azure skies. The figures, dressed in flowing robes, are rendered with remarkable economy, creating a sense of movement and quiet contemplation while allowing the striking architecture to dominate the scene.

Ågren’s expressive handling of paint and simplified forms reflects the influence of post-war Scandinavian modernism, producing a work that feels both timeless and highly decorative. The painting is signed and dated lower right and remains housed in its original linen-lined mid-century frame, which complements the composition perfectly.

An elegant and unusual example of Swedish modernist travel-inspired painting, equally suited to both contemporary and traditional interiors.
