A striking mid-century oil painting by Danish artist Niels Mandrup Bruun, depicting a group of simplified figures and architectural forms within an atmospheric landscape. Signed and dated 1966, the work demonstrates Bruun’s distinctive expressionist approach, combining bold, simplified forms with a richly textured and heavily worked surface.
Painted predominantly in a restrained palette of slate blues, muted greys, deep blacks and earthy browns, the composition has a brooding yet compelling atmosphere. The figures are reduced to expressive, almost abstract forms, while the surrounding landscape is constructed through broad areas of colour and energetic, gestural brushwork. The result is a powerful example of Danish mid-century expressionism, sitting comfortably between figurative painting and abstraction.
The heavily worked surface is particularly impressive, with layers of impasto, scraping and expressive brushstrokes creating considerable depth and texture. Subtle flashes of lighter blue and warm earthy tones provide contrast against the darker foreground, while the simplified forms give the composition a distinctly modern character.
Signed and dated N. Mandrup Bruun 66 lower right, the painting is presented in its original period painted wooden frame, which complements its restrained Scandinavian aesthetic and authentic mid-century character.
Niels Mandrup Bruun was a Danish painter, draughtsman and printmaker who studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, where he was influenced particularly by Aksel Jørgensen. His work developed in an expressionist idiom, often incorporating elements of abstraction, with landscapes and motifs from his native region of Ribe and the surrounding marshes forming an important part of his artistic output. His work is represented at Ribe Kunstmuseum.
