The Plough | Oil on Canvas Painting

Artist: Alexander Langlet (1870-1953)

Origin: Sweden

Date: Early 20th Century (signed 1923)

Size: Approximately 46 x 54 cm framed (29 x 37 cm image size)

A charming rural scene painted in oils on canvas, depicting a farmer guiding a team of working horses across a freshly tilled field. Executed with confident, economical brushwork and a restrained palette of soft greys, muted browns and delicate pastel tones, the composition captures the enduring rhythm of traditional agricultural life.

Langlet’s painterly approach places emphasis on atmosphere and movement rather than fine detail. The powerful draught horses dominate the composition, their forms rendered with energetic brushstrokes that convey both weight and motion. The pale sky, touched with subtle pink highlights, contrasts beautifully with the earthy foreground, creating a sense of openness and calm characteristic of the Scandinavian countryside.

Oil on canvas. Signed and dated lower left, 1923. Presented in an ornate period frame and ready to hang.

Alexander Langlet (1870-1953) was a Swedish painter known for his landscapes, rural subjects and depictions of everyday life. His works reflect a strong connection to the Swedish countryside and are appreciated for their honest observation, expressive handling of paint and atmospheric quality. Paintings by Langlet continue to appear at Scandinavian auction houses and remain sought after by collectors of Nordic art.

Condition

Good vintage condition. The canvas is secure and the paint surface is stable, displaying attractive age-related character consistent with an early twentieth-century oil painting. The ornate frame exhibits historic repairs, visible cracking and losses to the moulding, all commensurate with age and use. The painting presents well and is ready for display.

*Please note that all paintings have had previous lives and may be in an antiqued / worn condition. Signs of wear and minor damage are to be expected, as they contribute to each painting’s unique character and history.
