Artist: Rune Strandberg (1925)

Origin: Sweden

Date: 1981

Size: Approximately 79 x 53 cm framed (78 x 52 cm image size)

A striking figurative composition painted in oils on canvas by the Swedish artist Rune Strandberg. Titled Modell vid spegel (“Model at the Mirror”), the painting depicts a seated female nude resting on a stool before a full-length mirror, creating an engaging interplay between the figure and her reflected profile. Executed with expressive, painterly brushwork, the composition balances strong structure with a softness of colour, capturing both the physical presence and quiet introspection of the sitter.

Strandberg employs a confident, gestural technique, using broad, fluid brushstrokes and a harmonious palette of warm flesh tones, muted greens, soft pinks and cool greys. The abstracted background and loose handling of paint lend the work a distinctly modern Scandinavian character, while the subtle mirror reflection adds depth and visual intrigue. The result is a timeless studio portrait that is both elegant and contemplative.

Oil on canvas. Signed lower right and inscribed on the reverse with the title Modell vid spegel, dated 1981, and identifying the sitter as Birgit Dahlström. Presented in its original minimalist wooden frame and accompanied by an original retrospective exhibition catalogue dedicated to Rune Strandberg, providing excellent supporting provenance. Ready to hang.

Condition

Very good vintage condition. The canvas remains sound and the paint surface is stable, displaying only light age-related surface wear consistent with its age. The original wooden frame shows minor cosmetic wear commensurate with its age and presents well overall. Accompanied by the original exhibition catalogue and ready to hang.

*Please note that all paintings have had previous lives and may be in an antiqued / worn condition. Signs of wear and minor damage are to be expected, as they contribute to each painting’s unique character and history.
