A striking mid-century oil painting by Swedish artist John Hedman, depicting a snow-covered landscape viewed across the Swedish countryside towards the distant mountains. Titled Mot Östberg och Bingsta, meaning Towards Östberg and Bingsta, the work captures a quiet winter landscape beneath a dramatic evening sky, with snow-covered fields, dark wooded hills and distant mountains layered across the horizon.

Painted in Hedman’s distinctive Scandinavian style, the composition combines deep forest greens and earthy browns with cool whites, slate blues and a striking band of warm pink across the horizon. The contrast between the heavy, expressive sky and the expansive snow-covered foreground gives the painting a wonderfully atmospheric quality, while the simple rural buildings and slender telegraph or utility poles provide a sense of scale and place.

Signed lower left “Hedman - 69”, the painting is presented in its original period Scandinavian frame with linen-covered mount, retaining its authentic mid-century character.

 

John Hedman (1913–1994) was a Swedish painter and draughtsman from Vigge in Jämtland. His work is particularly associated with landscapes and regional scenes of northern Sweden, and contemporary Swedish art dealers describe him as an accomplished, stylistically distinctive artist whose work remains relatively undervalued. His paintings are characterised by restrained compositions, expressive surfaces and an appreciation of the distinctive light and terrain of the Swedish landscape. (Konsthuset Iare⁠)

An atmospheric and highly decorative example of Swedish mid-century landscape painting, with excellent original provenance and a wonderfully authentic period presentation.
