A charming mid-century still life by Danish artist Karen Margrethe Bertelsen, depicting a vibrant arrangement of tulips and yellow apples surrounding a distinctive blue glass jug. Painted in Bertelsen’s soft, expressive style, the work combines loose brushwork, simplified forms and a beautifully restrained palette to create an intimate and atmospheric composition.

The painting is rich in colour and texture, with delicate blue, turquoise, sage green, soft yellow and warm red tones layered across the canvas. The tulips are rendered with expressive, gestural strokes, while the bold blue jug provides a striking focal point against the softly painted background. The simplified forms and confident handling give the work a wonderfully modern, almost semi-abstract quality.

The painting is dated 1950 and retains a handwritten label to the reverse identifying the work as “Tulpaner och gula äpplen” (Tulips and Yellow Apples), together with the artist’s name.

Karen Margrethe Bertelsen was a Danish painter associated with the Danish colourist tradition. Her still lifes, landscapes and portraits are noted for their soft, somewhat impressionistic approach, and she exhibited widely in Denmark and Sweden during her career. 

The painting is presented in its original period wooden frame.
