A striking mid-century figurative painting by Swedish artist Carl Berndtsson, depicting a group of figures gathered within a rugged Scandinavian landscape. Painted in Berndtsson’s distinctive expressive style, the work combines simplified forms, bold gestural brushwork and a restrained yet atmospheric palette to create a powerful sense of movement and depth.

The composition is rich in texture, with deep blue, slate grey, muted turquoise, earthy brown and warm ochre tones worked together across the canvas. The figures are rendered in broad, confident strokes, their simplified forms creating an almost abstract quality, while the surrounding landscape provides a dramatic and atmospheric setting.

The heavily worked surface is particularly impressive, with layers of thick, expressive oil paint and visible brushstrokes giving the painting a wonderful sense of depth and character. The restrained palette and bold handling are characteristic of Scandinavian modernist painting of the mid-20th century.

The painting is presented in its original period frame, a decorative wooden frame with a linen-effect inner mount, which complements the muted palette and authentic mid-century character of the work.
